Who we are
The Club came into being in the early 1980’s, when a large number of British Aerospace employees at the Lostock factory got together to run the Bolton marathon, they trained as a group and decided to form a Club. In those early days they met on Wed. nights in the sports pavilion on the large sports field at the factory and got together in the Sports Club bar for a beer and chat. There are still original members and some that joined in its second year active within the Club today. With the demise of BAe over the years the Club has moved its base several times, Lostock Leisure/Barnstormers, Bolton Arena/Bromilow Arms before arriving at its present base at Horwich Leisure Centre/Horwich Conservative Club. The membership has fluctuated over this period; it’s highest being in those early days of the eighties during the running boom when there were 100 plus members. The Club has always been proactive in its approach to the sport and organised many events in the past, these include the Lostock 6 miler (which is one of the oldest races in the area and still going strong), the Lostock 10K, C&A 20 mile race (this incorporated the Inter Counties 20 mile Championship and was a testament to the to the organisational prowess of the Club) and X-Country races as part of the SELCC League.
Today the Club is still very active and holds various events over the year, e.g. Chairman’s Road, Trail and Fell Handicaps all of which are followed by a get together and supper, there is also Bike/Run/Bike handicap. It is still part of the SELCC League and of course the Lostock 6 continues to be successful. Finally there is the Henderson’s End Fell race over the local hills and is becoming a favourite challenge for local fell runners.
The Club is not just about pounding the roads and fells, it is about developing a good social atmosphere, encouraging beginners of any ability/age to train and improve, and there is the annual camp in the Lake District which is always a good family occasion and well attended.
So if you are seeking to join a club that prides itself in its friendly and social approach with some running thrown in then look no further, come and try us out on Wed. nights at 6.45 for 7 pm start from the Horwich Leisure Centre foyer.
