Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round – March 2011
4 Lostock runners met at Barley near Pendle Hill for the Stan Bradshaw Pendle Round a 9 mile fell race in memory of the late Stan Bradshaw who was a key figure in the FRA & Clayton le moors harriers. This race is a replacement for the Half Tour of Pendle and follows the same start and route up to CP1 at the gate/stile in the wall past the Trig point but from there the route differs and there is scope for different lines especially to CP3, the run in from the Fell Gate at Buttock is again the same as the Half Tour.
We set off along the road at the side of Lower Ogden ressy then after 1 mile we turned right to ascend Pendle Hill on a gradual incline which is mostly walked but interspersed with brief trotts. Mike was already way ahead Mark C & Pete somewhere within stalking distance behind me. Half way up Checkers shuffled past me but i was reduced to a walk, no legs for even a brief run. At the top where the ground levels off i could see CP1 and Mark C 100 yds ahead with Mike another 100 in front of him. I thought i might claw some time back once we hit this flat bit but everytime i looked up Checkers seemed to be further away! his bright yellow top and particular running style clearly evident in the line of runners snaking ahead of me. On the way to CP2 i looked up and couldn’t see Checkers in the line of runners ahead, my god hes run fast i thought…..only to catch sight of a lone runner cutting his own path thru the Tussocks! it was Checkers trying one of his short cuts on a Albert Sunter type path! He rejoined the line of runners 70 yds ahead of me and we followed a partial path which we could see clearly as we followed the snaking line of runners for a good distance before once again Checkers decides hes had enough of the safety of a clearly defined trod and off he went veering left across the rough ground and Tussocks. I could see a few runners start to veer off and follow the pied piper himself, i had been round this course last week and knew he was headed in a more direct but less runnable route to CP3 so decided to follow and managed to get close enough to here the guy right behind Mark ask him ‘you do know where you are going dont you?’ to which which i saw Checkers shake his head and say NO! poor guy he did look worried. We came over a hill Checkers and 7 others had taken a lower line aiming directly for CP3 but had come to a wall with no stile, i had gone higher and came down directly to a gate so ended up leading this bunch of merry men. On the ascent ie walk from CP4 to Spence Moor we had a chat and a drink and could see Mike only 100yds ahead neither of us was in a position to start running to bridge the gap. Near the top i started a jog and was surprised when Checkers didn’t follow, i opened up a gap and as i descended to CP5 could see Mike on the last climb to CP5 so near yet not catchable. It was a slow jog into the finish and a wash in the stream before a nice bowl of soup, a cup of tea and a cake. Another excellent race organised by CLEM.
