Whaley Waltz – Sat 25th June…Its deeper than you think!

June 25, 2011

A race recommended by Checkers who ran this last year. Whaley Bridge is a village in the Peak District just north of Buxton and part of their village carnival is a race called the Whaley Waltz. This race is a 6 mile race on trails with a few shortish climbs which most people including me walked, it is a very scenic race on undulating trails that nobody should be scared of attempting even a roadie could do this race without breaking sweat.
After the race there was a typical village carnival with kids fair, stalls, cakes, face painting etc. An excellent day out with the kids, free to park, £1 entry to carnival for the wife, kids free, £5 for the fell race including the bath.

Saturday 18th June – The White Bear Way

June 21, 2011

The White Bear Way is a LDWA challenge hosted by the Adlington Scout Group. You can choose between a choice of 21 or 10 mile routes so there’s a challenge for the speedy types who fancy a quick 10 or the more challenged types that prefer the hills that the 21 has to offer.
Well myself and Mark Shuttleworth turned up in good time to collect our numbers. Time for a cup of tea and toast in the clubhouse. The only dilemma was the weather. Would it rain torrentially as forecasted or stay dry. I predicted the former. read on

In the horse racing calendar this was definitely “Ladies Day” and no Mr Elliott I don’t mean it was a chance to have a sneaky peak at the skimpy outfit being worn by a certain Horwich runner! I didn’t look once, honest!!

Well done the Lostock Ladies with a first place finish in the Team Event. Great effort!!

So after registering at the building behind Rivington Primary School it was off over the reservoirs to gather at the start on a warm summers evening. There Geoff pointed out Anthony, who was also running for Lostock and told me I should run with him, but having never seen Anthony run I decided to do my own thing, a decision I would regret. The start was somewhat of an informal affair as we waited for the organiser to synchronise his watch before he told us the top three from Mays event were not running! (more…)

I have not run this race before, but Checkers ran last year in 39:31 to come in 70th out of 125 runners. Only a 4 mile race so should be easy!.

2 Lads Fell Race – Thursday 16th June

June 16, 2011
A good turn out 200 + runners with six from Lostock who were well supported enroute by other non running members.
A warm evening with just the threat of a dodgy shower. Oh!! that  could have been the Lostock team.
A very fast competetive start with Mark C me!! shooting off as usual. Rob our youngest member soon reeled me in and was away.
The climb up Factory Hill was just horrible Mike tried to sneek past I was’nt going let him pass this early.  Now for a chance to get back in front, Mike joined the que up the alley while Me and Mark S pegged it up the slightly longer route up the road. I left Mark behind  as Mike and me were racing each other going up through the woods.  Mike came out back in front although only a short distance.
Unfortuantly it very slowly got bigger.  By the time we reached Two Lads I was losing sight of Mike, just had to keep going.  Had to make sure I stayed in front of Mark S, especially after his remarks. One year older, one years more experience thats what I say, all that running down the stony path in the dark I knew exactly where to put my feet.
However I nearly lost it coming into the finish I zig zagged the last 50m through the long grass Oh! and round the tree nearly giving Tom a chance to beat me over the finish line.
Our last runner in was Mark Sammon, who we hadn’t realised that he had entered.

67 Rob Smith            41:29
78 Mike Ernil             42:42
93 Mark Checkley      43:48
94 Tom Smith            43:50
96 Robert Sharkey 44:05
97 Mark Shuttleworth  44:16
170 Mark Sammon     51:45

Ennerdale Horseshoe – June 2011

June 6, 2011

ADRIANS CHALLENGE
The drive up was no problem apart from stopping for a wee stop in the bushes at the side of the road and going to the wrong car park, we were early though.

Made sure I was fully prepared and soon got sorted getting warm now needed to get out of the sun. Not too many runners in this race around about 80 + which made it more daunting. We had the usual debriefing before the start, getting very warm now.  Mike thought it was unusual using a dibber. We lined up along the lake side in full sun to get ready to start, started at  a good steady pace we needed to, soon got very warm sweating a lot it seemed a long way to fell going along these farm lanes. Help for Heroes

June 4, 2011

You may all be aware that each year Allan & Pat Jones invite our Club and others to take part in “Allans Mystery Tour” which  is held at their home. The event is a type treasure hunt where points are gained from finding/solving clues (Thanks to Geof Sale these can be very obscure) and lost again if you go over time. They are always good fun and our hosts provide an excellent supper. Any monies left over after food and prizes are paid for is donated to a charity. It was decided that the proceeds from the last two events a total of £180 plus the left over cash from ”Leo’s Duathlon” held in April would be donated to the charity “Help for Heroes”

The thank you letter and certificate are attached.

Sat 28th May – Hutton Roof Fell Race

May 30, 2011

At the last minute the wife decided we would go to this race as we went last year and it poured down…oh and i got beat by Craig. The race is part of the Hutton Roof village fair with face painting, Alpacas on show, Hen racing, various stalls and plenty of cakes making it a good afternoon out for the kids. The race itself is a classic, a smallish ascent near the start then fast only mildly undluating trail running to the half way point where there is a steep climb (everyone apart from top notch runners walk this bit) then another undulating, twisting trail run back to the finish, approx. 7 miles. I would recommend this fell race for anyone, even a roadie would like it as it is all runnable apart from the 2 short climbs which us average fell runners walk, coupled with the village fair it is a good day out.
