Wray Caton fell race
May 5, 20113 of us Mark C, Mike Baker and myself (Mark S) turned up at Wray near Lancaster for the Wray village Scarecrow fair and of course the fell race. The race is 6.5 miles typical straight up down course althougth the return route veers off from the outward route to give a tricky run into the village across fields and woods. The big attraction of this race is the village scarecrow fair that accompanies it making it a good family day out.
We set off and Mike was off like a racehorse with Mark C and myself ambling someway behind. Lost sight of Mike until we were near the turn round point where Mike was on the return route and i was still going up to the Trig. Shortly after turning at the trig i saw Checkers still on his way up, he shouted and so i stopped while he took a picture. It was a fast windy descent with tremendous views of Ingleborough and the surrounding hills. I was well goosed by the time we got to the finish as i had not run for 2 weeks prior to this but it was good to get back into the swing. A good race with plenty for the kids to do, face painting, country stalls, kids fair, birds of prey show, magic show, duck herding!!.
Well done to Mike Baker who i think should be now known as Fast Mike.

Thanks to all who took part and helped to make it a good event, everyone entered into the spirit of what it is all about – making training a bit more light hearted – it was good to see some new people coming up to join in with us, some of which managed to blag a good handicap out of me and that is usually hard to do. Thanks also to all the marshals – Elaine, Kath, Chris, Ray and Diane – without their help the event cannot be run successfully.
A valiant effort by Brian Halton who snapped a chain and pushed his bike for almost the entire first leg, (sabotage has not been ruled out!!!)
It was also good to see a group of members adding to the fun by running around the route.
All monies collected after paying for prizes will be added to the money raised at Allan’s Treasure Hunt for the “Help the Heroes” charity.
I conclude by thanking Leo for “being there” to present the prizes and give is usual support.
Film on Fell Running at night
April 15, 2011A short 15 min film on fell running (mostly night fell running) called The Bedlamites. The film is also about fell running in general, exploring our beautiful countryside and the community spirit that goes hand in hand with the sport. It also features 5 times English Fell Champion Ian Holmes.
The trailer of the film can be seen on:

Tues 29th March – Liver Hill Fell Race
March 30, 2011Mark C, Pete Noble and myself made our way to Rossendale for the 1st night race this year at Liver Hill. The 3 of us did this race last year on a very bleak night when i ran a stinker but this year was like a summers night – perfect conditions for a fast race. This race is only 5 miles long and would really appeal to John Smith as it costs nothing, yes its free ie nowt and you get a creme egg at the finish. Its tough because you start and then you’re right into a hill climb – the initial route is like the Cross Country route on the Red RoseXC circuit, once on the top its flatish normally very boggy moor before a relatively small climb to the turn round point and then back the way you came dodging the outbound runners as you head back. The only dodgy bit is the queues at the stiles again from both outbound and inbound runners, luckily i had no holdups and ran very well for me and even managed to pass Burndens Izzy Hughes on the run in to register my fastest time for this race. It was good to run a short fast race and register a good time for me, i was followed in by Mark C and Pete and also saw John who runs on a Sunday with Ray / Mike. After the race we had a birthday drink in the Rossy club bar and met a few locals, enough said on that point.

Two Crosses LDWA 2011
March 21, 201110 of us here today. Not the nice day we wanted but a lovelly wet damp and MISTY!! morning didnt really see anything of Albert Mark Salmon VIcky and Michele apart from at the start. No sign of pete at the start someone said he was stuck in the loo, somehow he got infront of us in stealth mode. Mike set off at lightening pace with Mark S in pursuit I along with Jason + Ray trundled along behind at more leisurely pace, I did um and arr about going up to the top of Cheetham close, Im glad I did’nt as The 18m +25m split came up quicker than i thought Mike + Jason decided to do the 18m.
Then it was my choice umm????
My legs were already aching and we had only done 6 or 7 miles, The lady on the check point bullied me ??? Mark S was no help either
Do or die I decided to do 25 miles. The weather got worse it rained harder and there was a horrible breeze. No real problems navigating here just a matter of where to cross the wall then for a nice easy bit of running along parallel to Belmont res wWith Mark and Pete getting a bit of a lead on me And Ray here.
