Wincle Trout – Saturday 3rd June

Me and the Mrs came across this race by chance last year, we were driving aimlessly around after getting lost looking for a campsite when we saw a load of knackered runners cross the road in front of us and then turn up a very steep hill, I remember saying to Bev “look at those nutters, you would never get me doing a race like that”, one year on and I was doing it! We arrived on Friday evening and set up camp a mile away from the start at a site which is behind a nice old pub called the Wild Boar. This doesnt make for the best pre-race preparation because they serve a fine pint of guinness, but after only having a few(!) on Friday night, I was well up for it on Saturday. The race is part of the Wincle village fete with its marquees, tea and cakes, real ales, dog show etc. so there was loads going on. I thought I was the only Lostock runner racing and was pleasantly surprised to bump into Maggie Slamin just before the race, Maggie shamed me by wearing her club vest whereas I didn’t bother because it was still in the wash from the chairmans race, I must make more of an effort considering there were runners fron Burnden and Bolton harriers, next time I’ll make sure I’m wearing green. Its billed as a fell race but I’d say it was more of a trail/cross country race really, It had a bit of everything though, Five and a half miles of country roads, woodland paths, open moorland, some really tough climbs and a river crossing, the countryside and views were stunning, all in all a fantastic race which always sells out every year. 325 runners turned out and every finisher gets a fresh trout from the local trout fishery! Couple it with a weekend camping at the Wild Boar and it makes for a top weekend, next years race is on July the 1st, I’m definitely doing it again!

Well done Speedy & Maggie, never evan eard of this race before. Keep tryin the Guinness Speedy i’m sure it’ll help.

Next year’s Wincle Trout Run is on 1 June 2013, NOT 1 July.
I should know, I’m the organiser.

Entry forms are usually available at the end of January. It’s best to enter early. I think we should have a Lostok team entry!

I’ve entered the 42nd Great Hill Fell Race on Saturday 16th June, 3.00 pm. Is anyone else doing the race? There’s a free can of alcohol to all finishers!!!!
