Sunday 27th November – Dave Staff Fell Race

November 27, 2011

Last race in the Lostock Fell Racing season.

A fresh blustery day a little cooler than recent, but a nice sunny day at greeted 7 of us at Sunnyhurst Woods, this race is always enjoyable even if your not really up for it, as I was last year. Probably something to do with the Ozone, Robert Sharkey turned up, and we were soon winding him up and putting the pressure on. Saying things like you’ll be first back then.

Gill turned up for the ladies, Adrian started nearer the front. Me and Mike started together, there was a little bit of elbows and then Mike was away. Halfway through the woods Robert silently glided past me. That was last I see of him too.

Although I cant compete with the likes of those three I too was having quite a good race passing other runners all the way round. I never looked back once. I just did’nt want to see where Mark S + Pete were, as I was approaching Aggies Staicase, where I knew they may be able catch me.

Robert was none fussed by the pressure and made sure he came in first just a few seconds infront of Mike.

64 Robert Sharkey 44:06
66 MIke Ernill 44:12
68 Adrian Hope 44:30
85 Mark Checkley 46:52
98 Pete Noble 48:36
101 Mark Shuttrleworth 49:04
164 Gill Caldwell 59:03

Thanks Adrian for the info that I coiuld walk up the gravel path as everyone else does thought I was never going to get there it was a slow slog up to the tower not helped by the wind which at one point was pushing me sideways as I dont do downs well aggies was difficult but the run back in was good and I really enjoyed it and pleased that I finished in under the hour. Will try to do more next year if only for the views

Looks like another big club turnout.
My excuse is a bout of man-flu.
I wonder whether Gill could get any more Ladies out to sample the delights of the fells.

Looking at the times it looks like it was a proper good race, especially between the first three. It must have been neck and neck coming up to the line. I reckon Sharkey (Lostock’s narrowest man)would have had the added advantage of not incurring any wind resitance.

I hadn’t been in a race for a good few weeks so it was nice to do this one.
Was very windy across the tops but the views were amazing.
I crossed the finish line to find Mike right behind me! he must have been stalking me for ages. Mind you if i would have known i probally wouldnt have been able to go quicker.
P.S. Mark L i think it is spelt ‘resistance’ ;)

Basic lesson learnt there dude, always check your tail especially near the finish, you never know whos in stealth mode just waiting for the chance. I learnt that at Hutton Roof last year and put it to good effect at Shepherds Skyline to beat that Checkers!
