Orienteering – Night Street League
October 3, 2011If you want something different from your regular street/trail run on a Wednesday evening over the coming winter months, I would like to take this opportunity to point out that South Ribble Orienteering Club <http://www.sroc.org> hold “Night Street Orienteering” events roughly every two weeks between October and March. The events are not expensive and cost only £2 Adults/£1 Juniors (must be accompanied by Adult).
If you have never heard of Street Orienteering then here is a quick synopsis…
Events normally take place in urban suburbs of towns in the North West. You chose from 45, 60 or 75 minute courses depending on how long you want to be out for. You are given a control sheet describing the features you must find (Features can include Lamppost numbers, telegraph pole numbers, street names etc..). Each entrant is set off individually with at least 1 minute spacing. When you set off you are given a map with all of the control points marked on it, each with a different score value.
CHALLENGE: The challenge comes in trying to pick an optimum route to gain you the maximum number of points but making the most of your time and not returning too early (wasting time) and not returning late, thus incurring penalties.
PENALTIES: You are penalised heavily for being late. Typical penalties would be 1 point for each 3 seconds you are late returning.
SCORING: Scores are worked out based on the time limits chosen and also based on a points per hour. You don’t necessarily have to run the length and width of the map to get a good score. Points are spread quite evenly across the map.
