Fell Running

In general fell running is about running in open country and usually involves running up a hill.

Fell races are informal affairs where you very often turn up on the day of the race usually the registration is in a pub, pay typically £3 to £4, and then run the race. After the race the results are announced again usually in a pub.
The 10 Fell races selected for inclusion in the 2010 fell calendar are:
These races can be split into 2 categories

(i) 7 races of approx. 6 mile – Wardle Skyline, Belmont Winter Hill, Pilgrims Cross, 2 Lads, Bull Hill, Shepherds Skyline & Dave Staff.
These shorter races could be viewed as good entry races into the sport of  fell running and while each will contain some hill climbing – which is very often walked albeit bent forward with hands on knees and tongue on the ground – are suitable for the average club runner.

(ii) 3 longer races of between 9 – 12 miles, Winter Hill, ½ Tour of Pendle and Whernside. These races are not for the novice runner and previous experience of fell running can be required as an entry requirement.

Fell Race Championship
To qualify for the Championship you must complete 6 out of the 10 races which can be achieved by doing 6 out of the 7 shorter races detailed above. Points are awarded for each race according to your finishing position relative to other Lostock runners inyour age category. Again if you manage to run more than the 6 minimum requirement, your best points tally will be taken.
