Treasure Hunt Wednesday 28th April 2010

April 28, 2010

Many thanks to everyone for turning up to Wednesday nights event on what turned out to be a glorious evening, with competitors from Lostock, Chorley Harriers, Horwich RMI and not forgetting the golden oldies from Horwich cycling club. First place was shared between “The Orienteers ???”, (Albert, Tony and Mark) and “Randall, Hopkirk and Deceased”, (Anna Maria, Pete and Tony) with our own “Phoenix from the flames” (Adrian and Jason) narrowly behind.

Hopefully everyone enjoyed the evening and appreciated the finer points of some of the more dubious clues as well as the sometimes menacing approaches of householders and landowners, curious and sometimes annoyed at runners gawping through windows, quizzing occupants about the clues and sometimes manually removing pub drinkers from a bench displaying one of the answers.

It certainly makes it worth the effort of putting on an event like this when we hear the comments afterwards and that nearly all the checkpoints had been covered and correctly answered.

Finally can I thank Alan and Pat , first for all the hard work they put into this, preparing the food during the day and then along with Mark cooking, serving and providing drinks and second for allowing us to use their home for the staging of this event, I know that everyone enjoys the experience.

Wednesday 21st April 2010 – fell group

April 22, 2010

After an assortment of warm ups (much to the bemusement of passing traffic) 7 of us set off for the fells, a few yards into the run the first near death experience of the night was upon us, when an elderly gent refused to stop at the crossing. With the adrenaline now pumping we took to the trails and made our way up to the pike where Albert was hit by an out of control lady on mountain bike. A quick breather at the Top and we where off again on the boggy path upto Noone Hill. From there we steamed over to the Trig point where Colin kindly demonstrated the correct technique of a commando roll. Once at Deane Ditch 5 of the bravest (or stupidest) gents took Alberts lead down to Two Lads over some pretty wild terrain Which I would like to add “was not a path” (maybe a sheep path but not the human kind). Almost dark we lengthened our stride back down the trails to the leisure centre. 8 miles, 2 hours and a few hills chucked in for good measure. Apart from some aching knees I’ve survived my first outing with Lostock and even managed to enjoy myself too. Cheers to everyone for a friendly welcome!

We were treated to another clear sunny evening for the race, even though it was very cold for the marshals. It was  a good fun night with a fiercely fought contest, there were a couple of entrants who decided to forge their own routes albeit in the wrong direction but made it to the finish. The prize winners were Geoff and Tony for the men, Gill and Sheila for the ladies. The fastest time prize went to Clive (who only just made the start due to broken chain) Pete Ramsdale from Horwich would have competed but for two punctures and wrong directions to start given to him by Ray McGloin.

My thanks go once again to the people who turned up to marshal, inc The Pollards, Chris, Matt, Mark, Neil and Danny Hope with girlfriend. It was also great to see Brian Holt supporting us and well on his way to a full recovery from his recent problems.

Wednesday 7th April – trail run

April 8, 2010

The nights are now beginning to be lighter, so we can at last get out on the trails around Rivington and away from the noise and fumes of road running, tonight we did just that. After splitting from the hill runners we hit the trails of lower Rivington around “Liverpool Castle”, it was great to be out there on such a brilliant night and the sunset over the reservoir was an added bonus. The quicker group ran in big loops around the slower one thus we all kept in the same area but each getting as much from their run as to their ability then it was a slow warm down back to HQ.

Wednesday 7th April – Fell run (no headtorches)

April 8, 2010

After a brief warm-up we set off up the Old Road, up thru Ridgmont Park, up thru fields by Shepherd Drive to Matchmoor, over Matchmoor to follow a trail up to briefly join the 2 Lads route before turning off to descend Burnt Edge. With Albert setting the pace we just followed, we passed Holdens farm and went left on a track that took us back on to the 2 Lads route which we followed to the 2 Lads summit. After admiring the view for a minute we were off chasing Albert down to the Pike Cottage then Wilderswood and Wallsuches. He is a one man tour of Rivi.

Wednesday 31st April – part head torch run

April 4, 2010

Only three off us this week on the run on the moors.
We left the leisure centre after the warm up with the rest of the club and headed to two lads via Wilderswood, where it started to snow a little on us, from here we followed the boundary wall up to the mast, we followed the road round and picked up the track across the snow to Noon Hill, from here we dropped down onto Georges Lane as it was starting to get dark, we headed up to the Pike got the head torches on and headed back to the leisure centre. 7 miles in 1hr 20.

Wednesday 24th March – Headtorch Run

March 26, 2010

This was the last full headtorch run before the clocks go forward at the weekend.

Because of the club meeting 6 of us set off a few minutes earlier than usual on a route that inevitably took in the Pike. From the Leisure Centre we headed up Factory hill, skirting the left of Wilderswood, left to Ormstons Farm and down thru Tigers Clough. Allan then led the way following a direct muddy trail between fields on our left and the Clough on our right upto Georges Lane and then the Pike. After a few minutes recovery it was down to Georges Lane via the steps and right to run the Winter Hill fell race start in reverse. At the Barn we followed the trail to the back of Rivi school and then back to the leisure centre for a much needed shower.

Look forward next week to a bit of natural daylight!

Wednesday 24th March – Road run

March 26, 2010

Last of the dark training nights started as usual at the Horwich Leisure Centre.
Four groups set off, the fell runners managing a 6 mile run passing the pigeon tower.
I bet they will be glad to put their headlights away for 6 months.
The other groups taking a gentle climb up to the Jolly Crofters then splitting up to tackle various heights up past Matchmoor Stables.
This is the section where the good runners are talking all the time and the rest, me included, just listen. It certainly opens the airways!
Back to the leisure centre- down hill all the way.
A quick shower then over to the conservative club for pasty and peas and a talk by an amazing man who has completed 100+ marathons over a 30 year period.
A good night had by all !!

Wednesday 17th March – Headtorch Run

March 18, 2010

Well I haven’t been out with the club this year due to the bad weather and other excuses. I knew it was absolutely bone dry up Rivington so no bogtrotting if I did the fell running session. I have certain criteria for my outdoor sports, no ice, snow, excessive mud, extreme terrain or high winds and no all of those are not ‘character building’. As I have a touch of OCD I had charged my Garmin up in preparation. I had my new Petzl head torch (Christmas pressie) and was ready to go. This is my endurance run for my cross training in preparation for the Horwich Olympic Triathlon in May. The run route is a lot of what we do on a Wednesday night. Apparently it’s classed as a difficult Triathlon because of the run, wimps !!

There were five of us tonight so we set off up the usual route toward Wilderswood. The weather was absolutely perfect very still, clear and dry. Garmin was telling me I was still alive. As we got near to the top I nearly squashed a little newty-type creature. It was lying in the road pretending it was already dead so I blinded it with my high strength Petzl just to make sure it wasn’t. Vikki rescued him and put him on the wall so he could sunbathe in the morning. My ploy to distract them for a breather worked. So we carried on up through Wilderswood onto the Two lads and a circuit off round the mast road. NO MUD !!! I’m guessing the website ‘UFO’s over Rivington’ would have been excited if they saw me with my retina burning head torch and flashing armband. The flashing armband I kept on for safety reasons on the fells, low flying aircraft etc etc..

Anyway it was a most enjoyable run in perfect conditions and good company as usual.

Wednesday 10th March 2010 – Head torch run

March 11, 2010

As normal we had a 5 minute warm up with the Roadies then set off into the night. There is no set route to these head torch runs but with Allan Jones with us this week there was always going to be a visit to the Pike at some point in the run the only debatable part was which way we made it up there. So six of us set off up Factory Hill, tracking to the left of Wilderswood and then cutting a left to Ormstons farm, Tigers Clough and then the trail behind Rivi school. It was then off the main trail and up through the gardens to the Pike, with no cloud it was a perfect view all the way to the coast. We returned via Georges Lane, Wallsuches, Foxholes and Bridge Street.

In total just under 6 miles in a sedate 1 hour 10 mins.
